What is Dental Polishing?
Dental polishing is a practice used to smooth the teeth in order to remove calcium build up and plaque. It is also a preventative for plaque build up.
A dental polisher uses a rubber cup to smooth the teeth, in combination with a special paste with cleans the teeth efficiently. The paste used makes a huge difference, only the prophylactic paste (also know as ‘prophy paste’) is the correct product to use while polishing. All dentists use prophylactic paste when polishing the teeth. HappySmileUK only sell prophylactic paste with our professional home dental polishers.
It is a good idea to have the teeth polished before (not immediately before) having a teeth whitening treatment so that the teeth are smooth and the dental bleach can penetrate the teeth evenly.
What is Plaque?
Plaque, also known as tartar (Calculus) is a deposit of bacteria which builds up around the teeth and gums. Plaque turns into tartar when it is left for long periods and turns hard. Once plaque turns into tartar, scaling of the teeth is required to remove it. Using a dental polisher or having your teeth polished at the dentist helps to prevent tartar from occurring.
Plaque is the leading cause of gum disease and tooth decay. The polisher and prophy paste are proven to removed plaque and prevent tartar build up on the gums and teeth.
What is the Cost of Dental Polishing?
A dental polishing procedure at the dentist costs on average around £40-50 depending on the dentist.
A dental polisher purchased by a reputable dental supplier such as HappySmileUK cost an affordable £24.99 and can be used for repeat polishing. The dentist price is a one time session, the home dental polisher can be used more than once.
What are the Results of Home Dental Polishing compared to the Dentist?
The results of home dental polishing and dental polishing are exactly the same. The teeth are clean, smooth and the difference can be even be felt by feeling your teeth with your own tongue. Visually your teeth look a lot cleaner too, the difference before and after polishing, whether at home or by the dentist, is amazing!

Normally when we think about dental floss the first thoughts we have are of the string floss or the tape floss. But there are a wide variety of different flosses available these days and the dental floss brush is the one we are reviewing today.
Dental floss brushes are small brushes which are used to clean between the teeth. The brushes have a small plastic handle which holds a small usually metal fine stick which securely holds the bristles into place.
There are a variety of types of dental floss brushes which vary in shape and size. This is great because teeth do indeed vary in shape and size and to use a bristled brush to floss a variety of different shapes and sizes would be absolutely necessary, unlike with the use of string floss and others.
For the more narrow gaps a smaller floss brush would be required and for larger gaps the bigger floss brushes will be suitable. Dental floss brushes are a great way to floss whilst wearing braces or to floss around bridges or crowns. This is because string floss for instance, is renown for getting stuck in these areas and making flossing difficult.
Over all dental floss brushes are a great way to floss the teeth but as always with various other forms of flossing, it depends on the person and their shape of teeth, what work has been done to the teeth and comfort and efficiency for the individual.
Aquafresh Daily Mouthwash is a mouthwash to be used daily for regular oral cleaning, it is not a specialised mouthwash. This mouthwash comes in a nice shaped bottle and looks attractive. This mouthwash claims to strengthen enamel, prevent plaque, protect gums and give fresh breath.
Aquafresh Daily Mouthwash does kill bacteria in the mouth which does indeed help to prevent plaque and protect the gums. As far as strengthening the enamel, this feels more like a standard mouthwash rather than a mouthwash which is specialised.
Aquafresh Daily Mouthwash is a strong tasting mouthwash which may not be suitable for those who have mild tastes in mouthwash. For those who like strong flavours this would be a great choice.
This is a great choice of mouthwash for anyone on a budget, Aquafresh is also a renown dental brand and has been producing dental products for many years.
The mouthwash itself is not for people with specialised oral health problems or for people that want long lasting fresh breath. But Aquafresh Daily Mouthwash will do a basic good job at keeping the mouth clean.

HappySmile Teeth Whitening systems are popular with dentists and the public alike due to being a safe, professional and effective teeth whitening treatment. Currently HappySmile Teeth Whitening Kits come in two types of various strengths.
To learn more about the difference between these two types of whitening kit from the HappySmile brand, please read below.
What is HappySmile CP?
HappySmile CP is a teeth whitening kit which uses carbamide peroxide as its main ingredients to whiten the teeth. Carbamide peroxide is the base bleach which develops into hydrogen peroxide as it whitens the teeth.
Carbamide peroxide is more mild than hydrogen due to the nature of the process of the gels reacting on the teeth and changing into hydrogen peroxide.
Crabamide peroxide is an effective way to whiten the teeth and better for those who may suffer with sensitivity due to the nature of how the formula works on the teeth.
HappySmile CP comes in strengths of 10, 16 and 22 per cent carbamide peroxide, with the 10 per cent being the weakest (great for people with sensitive teeth) and the 22 per cent being the strongest. Many people start off using the 16 per cent.
What is HappySmile HP?
HappySmile HP teeth whitening kits are similar to the CP whitening kits only the main formula is hydrogen peroxide, rather than carbamide peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is the reaction which occurs when carbamide peroxide is applied to the teeth.
Hydrogen peroxide based teeth whitening gels basically cut out the speed it takes for the carbamide to change into hydrogen, this makes hydrogen a more rapid treatment.
HappySmile HP comes in strengths of 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide.
Ultimately both HappySmile CP and HappySmile HP give the same end result, which is a fabulous bright white smile from a safe and effective method.

Teeth Whitening Kills Bacteria in the Mouth
Professional dental whitening products contain bleach which is safe for human use orally. This bleach kills bacteria on and around the teeth. Since bacteria is a major culprit in tooth decay and gingivitis, killing bacteria in the mouth can only be a benefit.
Although professional dentist approved whitening systems do indeed kill bacteria in and around the teeth, dental whitening gels should not be applied directly onto the gums or other parts of the mouth as an anti-bacterial treatment. Simply use the whitening kit to whitening the teeth as directed to gain the benefits, teeth whitening systems are not for use on the gums and tongue.
So by whitening your teeth as directed the professional way, you will be indirectly killing the germs on and around your teeth.

There are so many brands and types of toothpastes available in the shops that it can be sometimes difficult to decide which one to buy. Many of us like to stay with a toothpaste brand of preference, but many of us also do not stick to one toothpaste brand but fluctuate between different types of toothpastes.
Depending on what sounds attractive as a toothpaste to us and also due to prices which interchange in the different shops which sell toothpastes. Also it depends on whether we have a specific purpose for buying a specialised toothpaste.
When it comes to toothpaste there are a variety of ingredients which are used in the formula. Thickeners and preservatives amongst many other ingredients are there to bulk up, thicken, add moisture too and keep the toothpaste fresh.
Abrasives are sometimes used in varying forms and different levels. But the main ingredients in any toothpaste is fluoride, it is fluoride which cleans the mouth and makes teeth stronger.
Do cheaper toothpastes contain less fluoride? The answer is no. When it comes to cleaning teeth the less expensive toothpastes, although do not contain ‘extra’ ingredients which might make the toothpaste more attractive to the buyer, the fluoride within the toothpaste is generally the exact same strength as many of the other toothpastes which are more expensive.
Toothpastes are sometimes specialised and contain ingredients for a specific purpose, but when it comes to basic cleaning, the cheaper toothpastes contain enough fluoride to clean adequately.
It all depends on what you seek in a toothpaste, you may want a strong tasting toothpaste, one that makes the mouth feel fresher for longer, a sensitivity toothpaste or one which helps the gums.
The cheaper toothpastes have the same amount of fluoride as many other toothpastes but when it comes to flavours and other specific requirements the more expensive toothpastes will be more suited.
What about more expensive toothpastes?
As mentioned in the article above, specialized toothpastes are very specific and needed for certain ailments and treatments and also certain types of cleaning. Arm and Hammer have a fantastic specialized toothpaste which helps keep teeth white and helps sustain white teeth after a tooth whitening treatment. Also the brand Britesmile has a whitening toothpaste which is also specialized. See below to find out more or read here whether standard toothpastes, which are not specialized, that claim to whiten the teeth work and why.
What is Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay which is also known as dental caries, is a process which happens when the teeth begin to disintegrate, in effect, rot. The tooth enamel, dentin and cementum develops holes through it which can even go as deep as the root of the tooth. Tooth decay is bacterial in nature due to the acid production of bacteria in the mouth which cause the tooth layers to break down and de-mineralization of the tooth to occur.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay is caused by the PH balance of the mouth becoming lower than what is necessary for natural remineralization of the teeth from saliva. The main cause of the mouth becoming more acidic is the presence of sugars in the mouth which oral bacteria feed off which produces the raised acidic levels.
The acid presence in the mouth gradually starts the break down the outer tooth enamel, then the dentin and then even into the cementum. The further the tooth decay progresses, the harder it is to treat, if found early tooth decay is easier to treat.
How Can I Prevent Tooth Decay?
To prevent tooth decay good oral hygiene is vital. Also diets high in sugars are a major cause of tooth decay, so the more sugary food is omitted from the diet the healthier the teeth will be and the less likely tooth decay will occur.
Pearl Drops Ultimate Whitening is the older product ‘Pearl Drops Hollywood Smile’ which has been updated and rebranded. This new ’4D’ whitening system claims to whiten the teeth by 4 shades in 3 weeks time of usage.
The use of pearl powder in this product is used as a mild abrasive, many toothpastes which claim to whiten the teeth do this by using a mild abrasive in the formula to help lift surface stains and prevent stains from sticking to the teeth. Though both mild and harsh abrasives do indeed clean the teeth and lift recent surface stains, these ingredients alone will not remove deep stains within the tooth enamel.
Pearl Drops Ultimate white is to be used in conjunction with regular toothpaste and only done for 3 weeks at a time to whiten the teeth. Although this product will make your teeth feel clean and leave a nice shiny smooth finish to your teeth, apart from lifting daily initial stains which could potentially stain the teeth, it will not whiten the teeth and remove deep rooted staining from the tooth enamel.
The use of abrasives of teeth is common in many toothpastes which claim to whiten the teeth and this is because these products clean the teeth more thoroughly than standard toothpastes due to the ingredients used. It is a great product and your teeth will feel really clean mouth refreshed, unfortunately if you expect yellow teeth to suddenly turn white after 3 weeks use of an abrasive toothpaste, you may be disappointed.
The only way to truly whiten the teeth is to use a dental peroxide formula tried and tested by dentists. Even then there are occasions where stains will not shift from the teeth. Deep stains within the teeth are not entirely easy to remove, especially by using an abrasive based toothpaste. The scrubbing action of the toothpaste just scrubs the external part of the tooth enamel, where as dental peroxide is a special bleaching formula with oxidizes on the tooth surface and opens up the pores of the tooth to penetrate deep staining and lifting it from the enamel to reveal the white tooth which was there before the stain embedded itself into the tooth.

Toothpicks have been used for thousands of years by humans to remove food stuck between the teeth. Yet even in the modern world with advances in dental technology, tooth picks are still used today. So what is it about a toothpick which makes people still desire to use them?
Tooth picks are great for removing food stuck between the teeth. Sometimes no dental floss is available and a tooth pick does the job very quickly. Unlike flossing the tooth pick will remove the stuck food with much more ease. The advantage dental floss has over a tooth pick is that the action of flossing runs in between teeth and all along the gums and up the tooth itself. This disturbs bacteria in hard to reach places and helps prevent cavities. A tooth pick will not do this, though they are handy to have around when eating a steak!
Tooth picks have been made from wood, bone, metals and plastic. Modern toothpicks are usually wooden or plastic though you could probably find metal toothpicks in a jewellers.
Corsodyl Mint mouthwash is specialised for the treatment of gum disease and mouth ulcers. The formula contains an ingredient called chlorhexidine digluconate which is extremely effective in treating ailments of the mouth such as gum disease, mouth ulcers and even fungal problems.
Corsodyl Mint Mouthwash should not be confused with the Corsodyl Daily Mouthwash. Corsodyl Mint Mouthwash is a treatment and it is not a mouthwash which should be used daily on going for a long period of time. Due to the nature of the ingredients even dentists may recommend the use of this product to help resolve ailments of the mouth. Corsodyl does have a daily mouthwash available on the shop shelves, but the packaging is different and it is plainly called ‘daily’ as not to confuse with the product which is a special treatment.
Corsodyl does have a side effect of staining the teeth unfortunately. This is due to the chlorhexidine digluconate which leaves a film residue ove rthe gums and teeth after use, especially if stain causing foods and beverages are consumed, or smoking, the stains will stick to the teeth easier. The staining is not usually permanent but sometimes depending on the person and lifestyle choices the staining can linger and need lifting from teeth professionally.
Corsodyl Mint Mouthwash is a highly effective treatment for ailments of the gums.
Sensodyne is a renown toothpaste brand which has been around for many years. Sensodyne Pronamel Toothpaste is a sensitivity toothpaste which claims to not only proved protection for sensitivity to the teeth, but to make tooth enamel stronger and repair the teeth from acid erosion.
Sensodyne Pronamel toothpaste does not contain abrasives, this helps in sensitivity as long term use of abrasive toothpaste (in particular the harsher abrasive toothpastes) can help to erode the tooth enamel, along with many other lifestyle factors such as high consumption of acid foods and beverages.
Sensodyne Pronamel toothpaste claims to harden the tooth enamel and helps to repair the damage done to the teeth from natural acid erosion.
This is a popular toothpaste but as always different people take to different dental products depending on their needs and tastes.
This toothpaste is a good toothpaste for sensitivity but unfortunately the taste is not very refreshing and after using it for a couple of days some people find the taste in the mouth is not as fresh as with the use of other toothpastes. If the toothpaste had a stronger flavour to it this may make the toothpaste much more worth while to buy.
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molar teeth that erupt in the adult mouth. These teeth normally appear between ages 18-25 year old. In some people the wisdom teeth do not appear at all. If the wisdom teeth are in a normal position and functioning correctly then there is no reason to remove them and the wisdom teeth can remain in the mouth.
However, there is not often enough space in the back gum area to accommodate the wisdom teeth, they can become impacted below the gum and press on adjacent teeth. This can cause many problems from abscesses to gum problems and even cavities on the wisdom teeth.
Wisdom teeth are removed very often due to lack of space which prevents the wisdom teeth from erupting properly in the first place.
Wisdom teeth are generally removed between the ages of 16-25 because this by this time the less damage will have been caused. The dentist normally removes wisdom teeth under a local anesthetic.
What are Metal Braces?
Metal braces are a type orthodontist specialist treatment where metal brackets are fitted to the teeth. The metal brackets are placed specifically in order to straighten the teeth and are created uniquely to fit each individual set of teeth. The metal braces cannot be removed except by the dentist.
Many years ago metal braces had metal head gear which connected to the braces and was quite off putting for people to wear. Head gear can still be used for metal braces sometimes but are usually worn at night and not during daytime hours. Most metal braces are worn without head gear in modern times now.
Do Metal Braces Work?
Yes metal braces are highly effective at straightening the teeth. Metal braces have come a long way since the old days. When the teeth are crooked it is not an easy task to straighten the teeth and it is something which takes time. Straightening the teeth is not a fast task that can be done by one or two dentist visits.
The results however are amazing. Metal braces are one of the best ways to straighten the teeth and although many people can be put off wearing metal braces in the mouth, the end result is definitely worth while.
Are there alternatives to Metal Braces to Straighten the Teeth?
Yes. There is a new type of tooth straightening treatment called ‘Invisalign’ where transparent brace like mouth pieces are placed into the mouth. The difference is that Invisalign can be removed whenever the patient likes. The major difference is the price, Invisalign are very expensive compared to metal braces. This is due to the fact that Invisalign need replacing frequently.
Oral B Satin Tape Dental Floss is a popular dental floss which can be purchased from most high street stores.
When it comes to flossing our teeth it is not easy to review a floss in the same way as some other products because each individual person has a different reason to why they prefer one type of floss to another.
Whether it tastes nice, or has no taste at all. Plus every mouth is different and our teeth vary, so one floss may be comfortable to use for one person but not another due to the different tooth structure in the mouth.
This is a review for Oral B Dental Floss Tape which is a great dental brand and the tape is different to the standard floss we all know too well.
Oral B Satin Tape Dental Floss has a lovely minty taste to it which is great considering that flossing between the teeth may not bring out the best flavours after a meal.
The tape texture of the floss does not seem to tear as easily between the teeth whilst flossing. This is extra brilliant for people who have crowns and other fixtures to their teeth as flossing can become tricky for some people depending on the work they have had done to the teeth or how crooked the teeth are.
The packaging for the Oral B Tape Floss is rather nice too. The colour is vibrant and the easy grip sides make the floss case easy to handle.
Over all the Oral B Satin Tape Floss is a fantastic flossing product.
Having good oral hygiene and a fantastic white smile is what we think of when we think of our mouths, but what are the names of those teeth which we desire to look so nice and white?
Each tooth has an individual purpose for our mouth which helps the beginning of the digestion process as we eat our food.
It is always great to remind ourselves of the these things which we lose sight of over the years, so here is a reminder of the technical names of the teeth.
These teeth are used for cutting food
These are the teeth we use for tearing whilst chewing our food.
Molars are use for crushing food.
Everything in the mouth has a different purpose whether it be the teeth for chewing and speech, the tongue, the gums and even the uvula. This is why we need to take care of our oral hygiene so that everything stays in working order.
Arm and Hammer is renown for being a toothpaste which uses baking soda. This specific toothpaste is formulated especially to treat the enamel of the teeth. The packaging is nice and very specific to the job the toothpaste is supposed to do, restores surface enamel.
Enamel Care by Arm and Hammer is a great toothpaste for sensitive teeth, not only does it help relieve sensitivity and clean the teeth and gums efficiently, this toothpaste also remineralizes the teeth restoring tooth enamel to a better condition.
This toothpaste really does stand out for enamel care. Acid erosion causes crevices in the tooth enamel, usually by the foods and drinks we consume. Acid erosion causes sensitivity and degrading of the teeth.
Enamel Care toothpaste by Arm and Hammer contains liquid calcium which makes this toothpaste stand out as a leader in enamel repair. Liquid calcium restores the tooth enamel with long term use.
Although this toothpaste is not promoted as being used for sensitivity (there is a sensitivity version of this product) it is still really effective at bringing relief to sensitive teeth. This is because the liquid calcium formula fills in the tiny crevices which are formed by acid erosion which helps prevent sensitivity.
Although this toothpaste is a great tooth cleaner and removes daily surface stains, it does not have the ability to whiten the teeth like a dental whitening treatment will. Arm and Hammer do have another toothpaste available which whitens teeth much better than another other toothpaste because it contains dental peroxide. However, peroxide based toothpastes although the best type for whitening, only contain small amounts of dental peroxide and should be used in conjunction with a professional whitening treatment, if a major difference in tooth colour is required.
Over all Arm and Hammer Enamel Care Whitening toothpaste is an extremely professional and effective toothpaste for restoring tooth enamel and cleaning the teeth and gums professionally.

Listerine Smart Rinse mouthwashes for kids come in a variety of flavours mint and bubble being the most popular. These mouthwashes contain fluoride which helps prevent cavities in kids oral health care.

The flavours are not too strong and over powering, which makes a difference not only to adults but especially children. It freshens breath and kills germs in the mouth, helping to prevent tooth decay.
Aquafresh iso active whitening toothpaste is a unique toothpaste. This toothpaste product is a lot different to other teeth whitening toothpastes. Aquafresh iso active whitening toothpaste doe snot use harsh abrasives to clean and whiten the teeth, it does not use mild abrasives either, there is no special ingredients which makes it a unique toothpaste product. What makes this whitening toothpaste unique is the the way it is applied to the teeth.
Aquafresh iso active whitening toothpaste is a foam toothpaste. It comes in a cool mint flavour that is very pleasant. The foaming action means that the toothpastes penetrates between the teeth effectively cleaning the teeth and gums.
This is a great toothpaste for cleaning the teeth and gums and really does make the mouth feel clean. The foaming action does not only feel like the mouth is becoming cleaner, it works.
Aquafresh whitening toothpaste is a fantastic cleaning toothpaste and will remove surface stains, unfortunately it will not remove deep stains like dental peroxide will.

Colgate Max White One toothpaste is a product that has been around a little while but has recently changed its branding look. Before the packaging was silver but now Colgate have gone with a vibrant red colour to show off their product and it really does work. Not only does the red colour stand out but it reminds us that it is Colgate, the brand we all know and love.
Colgate Max White One is a toothpaste which promises to whiten the teeth in one week only, hence the name ‘Max White One.’
The toothpaste itself has a lovely fresh minty taste to it, great for a whitening toothpaste to have such a nice flavour. The toothpaste really feels fresh when when brushing and your mouth feels like it gets a really good clean, very refreshing. This toothpaste does not contain harsh abrasives and feels smooth on the teeth. It will lift surface stains and prevent stains from forming on the teeth whilst you use this product.
Unfortunately only dental peroxide will remove deep stains from the teeth due to things like smoking or long term use of stain causing agents through food and drink consumption.

How long a teeth whitening treatment can last really does vary from person to person. Because everyone is an individual with different lifestyles, it can never be predicted how long a whitening treatment will last precisely.
A teeth whitening treatment can last from 1-2 years maybe even longer if the teeth are taken care of and all stain causing activities are avoided completely or dramatically reduced. Some people may need to top up their whitening every 6 months or so because of their lifestyle involving teeth staining activities on a regular basis.
Lifestyle Factors Which Make a Difference
Lifestyle factors which will determine how long a teeth whitening treatment lasts are eating foods and drinks which stain the teeth such as red wine, cola, turmeric, tea, coffee, any food or drinks high in tannins and of course, smoking. Read more here about what causes stains on the teeth
Another Important Fact About Whitening the Teeth and How Long it Lasts
Sometimes people assume that lifestyle factors affect the teeth over a long period of time, this can be true, it doe snot generally happen over night. But what is important to understand is that during and directly after a teeth whitening treatment the pores on the tooth enamel are more exposed than normally. This means that this is the most vital time to refrain from stain causing activities. If you can refrain completely whilst you whiten the teeth then you will not only have a more effective treatment, but you will have a whitening treatment which lasts much longer.
Whilst the treatment is happening it is best to prevent any stains from entering into the pores. Cut out all stains causing foods and beverages or use a straw to drink tea and coffee. Try not to smoke, if you have too, whiten your teeth at night before bed so you leave a gap between smoking whilst you sleep. Read more here about how to sustain your white smile
Whether it is for a teeth whitening treatment or a dental hygiene check up, we all have a good reason to need to visit the dentist.
We all need to visit the dentist so that we can maintain good oral health, sometimes we also visit for cosmetic purposes. Modern dentistry has come a long way since the older days when dental techniques did not have the ability to use modern technology which makes dental procedures more comfortable for the patient.
However, some people still have an irrational fear of the dentist, for some people this can be severe and inhibit them from even wanting to go for a check up. These types of fears are best cured by professional counseling because it inhibits the person from facing their fear – which is a necessity for good dental health. Not everyone has a fear which inhibits them from going to the dentist but, it can make the experience uncomfortable and mean they may put the dental visit off for longer than they should.
Read below for some tips on relaxation when visiting the dentist.
Tell Your Dentist Your Fears
First of all before any relaxation tips will work, you need to make sure your dentist is aware of your fears. This means the dentist will treat you differently – with more care. Do not worry about being embarrassed because people of all ages have fears of the dentist or feel anxious when sat in the dental chair. It happens more often than you think and the dentist will be used to dealing with people with dental anxieties. Let the dentist know and they will do everything to make you feel better.
Make a Request to your Dentist
After telling your dentist, for your own piece of mind ask the dentist that if you wish him to stop at anytime that he will. Most dentists will already agree to this and inform you that if you lift your hand up during the procedure they will stop for a moment. This just gives you a little control in the situation so that you have the comfort of the dentist stopping at any point.
Most dentists play the radio whilst you are sat in the chair, get into the music and talking on the radio. You could even take an ipod or MP3 player so that you can listen to your own music. You can even download books which are narrated to listen too.
Look at the Bigger Picture.
It is only 20 – 60 minutes of your life. Try to think of worst situations to be in than sat having your dental procedure – which will benefit you ultimately. It always helps to imagine a worse case scenario that makes the situation you are in seem much easier. For instance, there are many people both young and old in the world which unfortunately have no access to dental health care, so when they get problem in their mouth there is no dentist or modern technology to help relieve it. Tell yourself that you are lucky to have access to such modern dental technology which will help your dental health.
Relax Before you go
Relax the night before and on the day of the dental visit. Try having a relaxing bath, listening to relaxing music and pampering yourself. Maybe you could listen to relaxing music the night before then take the same music with you to listen to at the dentist.
Do You Want to Whiten Your Teeth? Did You Know You Can Whiten the Teeth at Home?
When it comes to oral health a dental visit is very important, but did you know that you can get whiter teeth in the comfort of your own home? As long as you get your teeth whitening kit from an official dental supply company which use dentist only products, this is a safe and effective treatment and easy to do.
Colgate Plax Whitening Mouthwash claims to whiten the teeth with effectiveness of 48% stain removal. It is a mint flavour and also has the same uses as the other mouthwashes from Colgate’s Plax mouthwash range.
This is a really good mouthwash for cleaning the mouth and preventing plaque. It is a good mouthwash to helps remove surface stains and helps keep stains from forming as bad on the teeth. The minty flavour is very pleasant, though the mouthwash flavour as a whole is very different to the others mouthwashes from the Plax dental range, this is due to the difference in ingredients which work to help clean the teeth and mouth in a much different way than the standard or sensitive mouthwashes do.
Although Colgate Whitening Mouthwash is a good dental product, it will not remove deep stains from the teeth. The only way to remove deep stains from the teeth is to use a professional dental peroxide which is specialised at removing deep stains from the tooth enamel.

Colgate Plax mouthwash comes in a variety of flavours and types. Ranging from cool mint to gentle mint, sensitive to whitening, the Colgate Plax range has plenty of mouthwashes to choose from.
Colgate Plax Mouthwash is alcohol free (a new adjustment) and kills 99.9% bacteria in the mouth. It is claimed that you will get 12 hours protection using Plax mouthwash.
Colgate Plax Mouthwash is certainly a great mouthwash to use to keep your breath fresh. Whether it makes your breath feel fresh for 12 hours straight is questionable, but this is not a reflection on Colgate only, many mouthwashes make similar claims and depending on your oral health and lifestyle and think 12 hours of freshness is pushing it just a little bit.
This is a mouthwash that does freshen the breath and works. It is not a very strong tasting mouthwash, but this purely depends on what mouthwash you prefer, some people prefer strong tasting mouthwashes and others the more milder mouthwash.
Over all Colgate Plax Mouthwash is a good mouthwash to use and it does freshen the breath well. It is affordable and it caters for many needs with it’s different flavours and sensitivity mouthwash for those with sensitive teeth.
HappySmile CP has a 10% carbamide peroxide teeth whitening system especially for people with sensitive teeth. The feedback has been fantastic for this product and people really love the results.
HappySmile CP 10% is great for people who prefer a lower strength gel but still want a fabulous bright white smile.
This teeth whitening system is still as fast acting as the stronger gels only it will whiten the teeth more gently and gradually build up to a great white smile. This teeth whitening kit may not be as strong as the higher strength gels but all the feedback suggests that the whitening effect is still impressive, especially for those with sensitive teeth who thought that it wasn’t possible to find a gel which works well for sensitive teeth.
You can purchase a full HappySmile CP 10% Kit Here which provides 10 tubes of whitening gel and a set of mouth trays. This very affordable system is a brilliant buy and will give a sparkle to your teeth.
If your teeth are very sensitive then rather than wearing the gels for 30 minutes per day, simply use the gels for only 10-15 minutes per day and your teeth will still have fantastic results but the fact that the gel is lower strength and you are controlling the wear times to match your needs means that you will have a gentler whitening experience that still produces a bright white smile as the end result.
Smoking tobacco can effect the mouth in a number of ways from more mild ailments to the severe diseases. Even though we smoke through the mouth we usually think of diseases of the lungs when we fear the dangers of smoking, but oral problems can and do occur frequently due to smoking or chewing tobacco.
Smoking also causes cosmetic problems by staining the teeth yellow or brown and sticky tar deposits on teeth and even dentures too. Bad breath is also more likely to happen to smokers. Cigarettes causes bad blood circulation in the mouth and gums which can also cause small white or red inflammation on the tongue. This is due to the high temperature of the smoke being inhaled into the mouth.
Smoking is also a major cause of gum disease, it contributes to bone and tissue depletion in the mouth and tooth loss is more likely to occur in smokers than non-smokers.
The worst problem which smoking causes is cancer, which can happen in the mouth or throat due to smoking or chewing tobacco. Unfortunately oral cancers are only usually diagnosed when it is already too late which means the cancer could have spread to other parts of the body. Dentists are all trained to notice and cancerous changes in the mouth and throat so this is another great reason why it is important to have regular dental check ups, if you have any concerns at all you should make an appointment to your GP immediately. Another worrying factor about smoking is that people developing oral cancers are getting younger and more women are developing the disease, smoking is a major culprit in the rise of this disease.
Chewing tobacco is just as dangerous as smoking, though some people who chew tobacco feel it is safer than lighting up and smoking, this is not true. Chewing tobacco can actually cause cancer that is particularly aggressive in the cheeks, gums and throat.

Sometimes, even though we have a good dental hygiene routine and take care of our teeth to the best of our ability, we can develop a variety or oral health problems, especially as we age. This is why visits to the dentist are very important, because even though we do our best to take care of our teeth and gums, oral problems can still develop and much of the time it is a professional dentist who is the first to spot a problem or potential problem.
Read below to understand the different problems which can occur in the mouth.
Tooth decay is in effect, rotting of the teeth. This is caused by plaque bacteria which produce acids which erode the tooth and cause cavities – holes in the teeth. Once the cavity breaches the enamel into the dentine, the tooth can become sensitive and later pain can occur. Sometimes fillings may be needed, root canal treatment or even tooth extraction in severe cases.
Consuming sugary foods and beverages are a huge cause of dental cavities and tooth decay so avoiding these where possible will have a great benefit to your dental health.
Gingivitis is an affliction of the gums (gingiva) caused by bacterial plaque in the mouth. The gums become inflammed and can bled as well as a number of other symptoms. Anyone who suffers from gum disease will almost all have had gingivitis before developing it, the difference is that gingivitis when caught before gum disease is far more treatable.
Periodontal Disease/Gum Disease
Gum Disease is a serious problem and needs efficient treatment when diagnosed. It starts off mild as gingivitis but soon develops where gums can recede from the teeth, tooth loss and visible pockets between the tooth and gum, as well as bleeding and swollen gums. Left untreated periodontal disease can cause irreversible damage so it is important to get checked with your dentist if you get of of these symptoms.
Acute abscesses are painful because they cause swelling due to fluid build up. Most dentist treat abscesses by draining the fluid, depending on the abscess and where it is situated depends on the treatment, sometimes an antibiotic is used to clear an infection due to the abscess.
So remember to have regular visits to the dentist to keep a check on your oral health, especially if you have any symptoms which point to gum disease, this is very important to treat as quickly as possible.
Picking the right toothbrush can make a massive difference to your daily dental hygiene routine. There are a wide variety of toothbrushes available on the market today so sometimes it may be difficult choosing the best toothbrush for you. Take a look at our tips below for picking the best toothbrush for you.
The Toothbrush Head
Toothbrushes have many different shaped heads which hold the bristles in place. Sometimes people think that the bigger the toothbrush head the best the toothbrush, but actually sometimes the bigger toothbrush heads cannot clean certain parts of the teeth and gums which smaller toothbrushes can clean with ease.
The Toothbrush Bristles
The bristles on a toothbrush may vary but there are some factors which should not feature on a toothbrush. The bristles should not fall out of the toothbrush head. Also, there are soft and hard bristles, dentists always prefer soft bristled brushes and there are a number of reasons why.
Softer bristles are gentler on the tooth enamel and also on the gum tissue. When you use a hard bristled brush it can erode the tooth enamel over a long period of time, hard bristles can also damage the gums if pressed to hard against them. Many people can press the toothbrush much harder onto their teeth and gums than they realise, so softer bristles are always better.
The Toothbrush Handle
Toothbrush handles come in all shapes and sizes. The shape and size of a toothbrush handle will not effect how good the teeth are cleaning directly, but it will make the brushing more comfortable if you pick the right type of handle for you.
We all tend to be attracted to the toothbrushes which are our favourite colour or have some kind of sparkle or pattern which attracts us to purchase the toothbrush. But it is best to choose a toothbrush which not only has teh correct bristles and head size for your mouth, but the most comfortable handle too.
Electric or Manual Toothbrush?
So far we have discussed manual toothbrushes but what about electric toothbrushes? We have already got an article which explains the teh difference between electric and manual toothbrushes here or simply CLICK HERE FOR ELECTRIC Vs MANUAL TOOTHBRUSH
Remember that whether you brush your teeth vigorously or gently, the toothbrush will still need replacing after a few months due to bacteria and the bristles becoming worn, this applies for electric toothbrushes too.
What is an AirFloss
The AirFloss is a new tooth flosser from Philips which brings flossing the teeth to a whole new level. No more using string or tape to floss between the teeth! The AirFloss uses a surge of air with microdroplets of water to floss the teeth. The AirFloss is charged up on a stand which is very similar to how an electric toothbrush is recharged. You simply add two teaspoons worth of water to the AirFloss and it is ready for use.
Another great feature is that mouthwash can be used instead of water so when the flossing takes place antibacterial microdroplets are penetrating between the teeth. If you have crowns and bridges the AirFloss may work better for you than standard flossing products, thsi sbecause some people who have crowns and bridges complain about difficulty flossing around the said areas, the AirFloss solves this problem in an instant.
Does the AirFloss Work?
Yes. The AirFloss does work and has been a big hit amongst dental professionals. The AirFloss is a great way to floss the teeth with less chance of bleeding due to the nature of how this flosser works. Rather than using a standard floss (which does work for flossing teeth efficiently) that disturbs the bacteria between the teeth by rubbing against the teeth and gums, the AirFloss, even though applying more pressure in theory, is gentler on the teeth and gums yet far still highly efficient at cleaning the teeth and disturbing the hidden bacteria which cause so many problems such as tooth decay.
When is comes to flossing the teeth the Philips Sonicare AirFloss is a fantastic product to use to floss the teeth. It is easy to use, advanced, gentle and highly effective at flossing between the teeth. Obviously standard dental flosses still work, whether you want to purchase an AirFloss is down to affordability, convenience and which flosser you find the easiest and most efficient to use. This floss product is well worth trying and has had many great reviews.
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth which can replace both the upper and/or lower teeth. With the availability of dental implants dentures are not as popular as they once were, but it must be known that dental implants are not suitable for everyone and some people cannot choose implant because of the condition of their teeth and gums.
When there is a lot of tooth loss then dentures are the only option because implants cannot be performed on massive tooth loss.
When a person has lost teeth it is vital that they get dentures because not only does it cosmetically cause problems, it affects chewing, speech and the muscles in the face, in fact, the face can appear to collapse in on itself.
Dentures take approximately a month to make with around five visits to the dentist. First the dentist takes an impression and a wax bite is created to determine the dimensions of your mouth. You will then be given a temporary denture to see how it fits before final adjustments are made and the final denture is fitted.
Wearing dentures for the first time can take some getting used to, just like when wearing braces for the first time, it may slightly affect your speech and eating habits. This becomes less apparent over time though, it is simply a matter of getting used to the dentures.
Dentures need to be removed and cleaned daily, there are special products for this purpose. They are also very fragile so it is important to take care of the dentures. If you have partial dentures then these need to be removed before brushing the teeth.
Dentures should also be removed at night to let the gums relax, this helps aid good gum health when wearing dentures.
Composite resins (white fillings) are mostly used in restoring broken or decayed front teeth. The dentist first removes the decay then adds a protective layer over the tooth to prevent sensitivity. Then the tooth enamel is roughened with a weak acid so that the bonding materials stick firmly to the tooth and stay in place.
The bonding material is then applied to the tooth and the colour matched resin is placed onto the tooth. The dentist then hardens it using a special light, once hard the surface is smoothed over and polished.
This technique is generally used for small fillings.
If the cavity is large a steel pin is also used in combination to help hold the material in place. Once the caries have been removed the dentist will create a bevelled edge to ensure a strong bond.
The dentine is again covered with a protective lining and the dentist then drills a pilot hole into the tooth itself.
A small pin is screwed into the hole and the resin is applied to the pin and surface around it, and finished as already described
The Tooth Stick
Sticks have been commonly used for oral hygiene through out the ages by a variety of cultures worldwide. Depending on the country whether it be India, China, Africa or more, would determine which type plant would be used as a chewing stick. Liquorice root has been a popular stick for dental chewing historically, biting and chewing the liquorice stick softens the stick which becomes almost stringy like in texture releasing lots of liquorice flavour into the mouth as well as rubbing against the teeth and gums.
The most interesting fact about people in the past chewing sticks for dental hygiene is not necessarily the stick itself but, that many of these sticks used by various different cultures had beneficial health benefits due to anti bacterial properties within the plants used. Due to the flavour within many chewing sticks they would also be a method of freshening the breath.
Liquorice chewing sticks can still be purchased to this very day.
Herbs and Spices
Herbs have been used widely across the globe as a teeth cleaner and breath freshener. Herbs such as sage, mint and even eucalyptus leaves have been used amongst many more to freshen and clean. Spices like cinnamon, anise, cloves and nutmeg just to name a few. Cinnamon, cloves and anise are not only used in herbal toothpastes today but also in some of the more commercial toothpastes. It seems the ancients knew more than they sometimes receive credit for.
Rags were used before toothbrushes were invented as a means to clean the teeth.
Shells and Ashes as Abrasives
In the classical age people sometimes started adding abrasives to herbal mixtures used as toothpastes. Sea shells or bones would be ground into a powder and rubbed onto the teeth as an abrasive to help clean the teeth. Egg shells were also sometimes used on the teeth as a cleaner. People would sometimes burn materials then grind them down to use as an abrasive on the teeth.
Charcoal was used on the teeth by being ground down and mixed with herbs and rubbed onto the teeth. The charcoal was then washed off the teeth and mouth rinsed.
Tooth powder came before toothpaste and can still be found for sale at chemists and supermarkets today. Like the ancients using ground bones or shells as abrasives and mixing it with herbs and spices, tooth powder started out as a similar cleaning agent. As time passed by the ingredients changed until we ended up with the modern tooth powder and toothpastes which we use in today’s world.
Tooth powder was used like we use toothpaste today.
Some brands promoted ‘Oriental origins’ of their tooth powders due to the origins of the toothbrush in China.
It was actually the Chinese which first invented the toothbrush using wild boar hairs and bamboo. It was westerners traveling to the Orient who brought the idea back from the East to the West and reinvented the toothbrush as what we know today.
Peroxide was first used to in the early 1900′s to cure gum disease and the effects of fluorosis. Dental peroxide is know for its antibacterial properties. By chance it was soon realised that by using dental peroxide in the mouth the patients teeth were also becoming whiter – peroxide as a tooth whitener was discovered as a side effect of other dental treatments.
Pearl Drops Brush on Veneer is a product which claims to give you a temporary white smile which can be brushed off the teeth using a toothbrush. The formula comes in a small bottle with a brush connected to the lid. This product claims that you can brush a veneer straight onto your teeth which will dry in seconds and last all day, at the end of the day you can brush the veneer off to remove it.
The liquid veneer formula has a tacky consistency to it and is transparent. When applied to the teeth the veneer formula still remain transparent or at best patchy. This product would be a fantastic temporary fix for white teeth in an instant if it actually worked, which it does not.
There is no veneer in a bottle which gives you a Hollywood smile and dries instantly. It is a shame because sometimes when we want to go out somewhere special and have not whitened our teeth, it would be great to be able to brush a temporary veneer onto the teeth to make our teeth look whiter for the evening. But unfortunately this product only brushes onto the teeth with transparency.
We like to give honest reviews on all dental products and if Pearl Drops Brush on Veneers actually worked we would not hesitate to write a glowing review – as we have on many other dental products which we do not necessarily sell or promote.

Whitening the teeth can cause mild sensitivity for some people, in particular if it is a whitening treatment using a high strength gel and the heat from a laser lamp rather than whitening the teeth at home, which is more gentler on the teeth. So if a person already has sensitive teeth the whitening process may seem a little daunting and it can be difficult to know what the best whitening options are for you as an individual with sensitive teeth.
What Should I Avoid?
If you are already prone to having sensitive teeth then having a laser whitening treatment is not ideal. Some people with sensitive teeth may be able to have a laser whitening treatment and not have many side effects, but the chances of having painful sensitivity are higher using a laser treatment if the person already suffers with sensitive teeth. With a laser whitening treatment the procedure is rapid and shows quick results, this is due to the use of a combination of a high strength whitening gel and the heat from the laser lamp. Although the laser whitening is highly effective for a rapid whitening treatment, it is not ideal for those with sensitive teeth.
What is the Best Way to Whiten Sensitive Teeth?
The best way to whiten the teeth is to avoid high strength whitening gels and laser lamps. Whitening the teeth with no laser is just as effective and the results are the same – it just takes a little longer. It is better to be in control of your whitening treatment at home when you suffer with sensitivity, than having one big rapid treatment under a lamp which you have no control over.
Which Product Shall I Use?
The best product for whitening sensitive teeth is the HappySmile 10% carbamide peroxide treatment. This whitening system is more gentle on the teeth than hydrogen peroxide and is a lot weaker than most of the other popular whitening gels, yet still effective. It is the same whitening treatment as used by the dentist only it is a lower strength, without the use of a lamp this gel will be much more gentle to your teeth.
The standard time for whitening the teeth per day is a 30 minute wear time. When a person has sensitive teeth we always advise that the mouth trays can be worn for as little as 10-15 minutes per whitening session. The end result will be the same, it will just take a little longer to reach the white result desired. For most people with sensitive teeth it is worth whitening the teeth in a controlled manner which is more gentle on the teeth. You can stop and start whitening the teeth at anytime, if you feel like you can leave the gel on for 20-30 minutes then do it, if you feel more comfortable only using the gel for 10-15 minutes then do it this way.
What Should I do After a Whitening Treatment?
There are a number of ways to help soothe the teeth after a treatment and prevent sensitivity from occurring.
1. Do not brush the teeth after whitening the teeth. Do you ever remember the dentist advising that you shouldn’t brush the teeth directly after consuming fruit juice? This is because brushing opens up the pores and because fruit juice is acidic, it is unhealthy for the enamel to brush after consuming fruit juice. The same applies for whitening the teeth, the pores are already exposed because of the whitening treatment so brushing the teeth directly after a whitening treatment is not ideal.
2. For the same reasons as above, refrain from consuming any acidic foods or beverages. This applies to very hot or cold food and drinks also. This is applicable for the whole period of time in which you whiten your teeth, so if it is a two week treatment try to refrain from food and beverages which could enter the pores of the tooth.
3. Use a professional sensitivity toothpaste during the period you whiten your teeth such as Colgate Pro Relief. This toothpaste uses a proven formula which helps soothe sensitivity. This toothpaste (or another brand of your choosing which works) can be rubbed directly onto the the teeth to soothe sensitivity. You can learn more about this by reading our Colgate Pro Relief Toothpaste Review Here which goes into more detail about this great sensitivity product.
4. Wash out your mouth trays and apply sensitivity toothpaste to them. You can soothe the teeth by using sensitivity toothpaste in the mouth trays.
5. Use a desensitiser. You can purchase a single tube or a four pack of desensitizing gels from our dental shop. Click Here to Purchase Desensitizing Gels which stop sensitivity in its tracks.
6. Use a soft bristled toothbrush during whitening treatments.
Please note: Before considering having any teeth whitening treatment, if you are currently in severe pain due to suffering from sensitivity, any bleaching treatment should be put on hold until the teeth are in a healthier condition and the sensitivity is under control. It is always best to have healthy oral hygiene before having any cosmetic whitening enhancement.
If you have any concerns then please contact your dentist to find out if your sensitivity is mild enough for a low strength whitening treatment.
Having sensitive teeth does not need to prevent you from having a bright white smile if the product is professional, low strength and you follow the dental advice above.

Keeping our breath smelling fresh is important for us all. Some of us have to make more effort at keeping fresh breath more than others due to lifestyles or oral ailments. Read below to learn some tips on how to keep your breath smelling lovely and fresh.
Brush Twice Daily
Brushing the teeth twice a day is important for optimum oral hygiene. Sometimes it is easy to forget to brush at night especially when tired, but it is best to brush the teeth before bed as well as in the morning to keep breath fresher.
Floss After Every Meal
This may not be possible all the time due to lifestyle but if you have it in mind to floss after every meal then you’re more likely to floss more often after eating, even if you cannot floss at all times after food. When we eat food remnant feeds bacteria between the teeth and starts to rot so flossing after you eat helps keep fresh breath. Read more about dental floss here
Mouthwash is a great way to freshen the breath in between brushing and flossing. Gargling at the back of the throat and swilling the mouthwash around for long enough for it to clean the mouth is a great way to freshen the breath. Read some mouthwash reviews here
Use a Tongue Cleaner
Tongue cleaning is highly underestimated. Cleaning the tongue is just as important as cleaning the teeth when it comes to oral hygiene. Germs multiply on the tongue and it is the source or bad breath for many people, so cleaning the tongue is vital for fresh smelling breath. You can learn more about tongue cleaning here
Whiten Your Teeth
Yes whitening the teeth can promote bad breath. The main ingredient in whitening formulas is dental peroxide which is a type of bleach, this bleach kills germs around the teeth and in the mouth.
Smoking cigarettes is renown for causing bad breath not only due to smoke inhalation and the way it smells but because smoking is bad for blood circulation and is related to gingivitis problems in the mouth. If you do stop smoking, whitening the teeth is a great option for not only freshening the breath but enhancing your smile after years of nicotine staining your tooth enamel.
Avoid Certain Foods
Certain foods cause bad breath including garlic and onions are the obvious ones to avoid, but other foods also cause bad breath such as sugary foods which bacteria thrive on in the mouth. Any food or beverage which drys the mouth is also a cause of bad breath since saliva production is vital to a health mouth.
Drink Fresh Water
Drinking fresh water over sugary drinks is always a better option for dental health. Sugar in drinks sticks to the teeth and feeds oral germs causing tooth decay. Water is healthy, refreshing and causes no problems in the mouth.
Chew Dental Friendly Chewing Gum
Chewing gum is great way to freshen breath through out the day. Using sugar free dental friendly chewing gum is the best as gum containing sugar is bad for the teeth. Chewing gum helps promote saliva production which keeps the mouth moist and helps protect the teeth. Learn more about chewing gum and oral hygiene here
Having a teeth whitening treatment is a fantastic way to enhance your looks whether you are a man or a woman. Before whitening the teeth there may be a few questions which a person might ask, one being how long the whitening treatment will last. There are a number of factors which determine how long a teeth whitening treatment will last. Read below to find out more.
The Condition of Your Teeth Before Treatment
Before a whitening treatment a persons teeth may be highly stained or lightly stained. If your teeth are badly stained due to lifestyle factors then a whitening treatment may be needed more often than someone who avoids stains causing activities from their lifestyle.
The Teeth Whitening Product Which You Use
When it comes to whitening the teeth, using a professional dental approved brand is paramount. The type of whitening gel which you use should always come from a dentist or a trusted dental supplier. Using a professional dental whitening product means that your teeth whitening treatment will be safe and effective and be better for the teeth both short and long term.
If you want a long lasting white smile then a professional dental whitening product is important. Our HappySmile Whitening Kits are popular with patient and dentist alike and have great results. Click here to purchase HappySmile CP Teeth Whitening Kit
Your lifestyle plays a huge part in how white your teeth will stay after a treatment. Ultimately it is the aftercare of the whitening treatment which will mostly determine how long your new white look will last. The most obvious and frequent reasons for which a whitening treatment won’t last as long are food and beverage consumption which contain stain causes agents such as tea and coffee, and smoking. Even avoiding the most obvious stain causers will not prevent any staining what so ever as a daily life in general over a long period of time will cause stain build up on the tooth enamel – it is simply more rapid and intense staining if the worst ones are used or consumed daily.
A professional teeth whitening treatment can last up to three years depending on the person and their lifestyle. Many people top up their whitening treatments every 6 months, sometimes just a few nights treatment is needed to brighten the teeth rather than another full treatment. It is impossible to say as it is different for every individual person.

What is a Manual Toothbrush?
A manual toothbrush is the standard toothbrush which you will find in most chemists and supermarkets. Usually plastic or silicone based, manual toothbrushes have no power source so brushing the teeth is manual. Bristles are embedded into the head of the toothbrush which range from being very firm, moderately firm, soft or very soft. There are manual toothbrushes that cater for all types of teeth such as sensitive teeth. Some tooth brushes have tongue cleaners adapted to the back of the head of the brush. The bristles com in a variety of shapes and lengths.
Like the bristles, the handles of manual toothbrushes come in a variety of textures and shapes to make the tooth brushing experience as comfortable as possible. With a manual toothbrush, toothpaste is placed onto the bristled head of the brush and the teeth are cleaned by hand.
What is an Electric Toothbrush?
An electric toothbrush is an updated version of the manual toothbrush. The same basis applies - bristles embedded into the head of the toothbrush to clean the teeth. The difference is that the toothbrush handles are much bigger, this is to accommodate the inner mechanics of the electric toothbrush. The head of the electric toothbrush is fluid, in other words, it moves and spins due to the power source inside the toothbrush handle.
The electric toothbrush is not used whilst plugged directly into the electric power source. The toothbrush itself is charged on a separate piece of dental equipment which is also the stand where the toothbrush can be kept whilst not in use. When the toothbrush is used it separates from the charger and is hands free whilst the teeth are being brushed.
The teeth are cleaned by a power source rather than by hand, which means the toothbrush head moves at a much faster rate around the teeth and gums.
Which Toothbrush is Best at Cleaning Plaque?
Realistically it depends on which manual or electric toothbrush and the requirements of the person using the toothbrush. It also depends on the lifestyles and general dental health of the the person using the toothbrush. Both manual and electric toothbrushes will effectively remove plaque and keep oral health at good levels.
The electric toothbrush can come with a variety of brush heads which have the purpose to penetrate deeper between the teeth when cleaning, almost a flossing effect. This can be a bonus feature in comparison to the manual toothbrush. Another bonus feature of electric toothbrushes are the convenience of not having to use your arm, wrist and hands to manually clean the teeth. The electric toothbrush only needs to be guided and speedily cleans the teeth in a thorough fashion with hardly any movement needed from the user.
Is there a Difference in Cost?
Yes there is a huge difference in price. Manual toothbrushes come at a minute fraction of the cost of an electric toothbrush. Although manual toothbrushes do need to be replaced after a certain period of use, replacing the toothbrush periodically at such a small price tag is very affordable.
Electric toothbrushes are more expensive due to the technology put into them. Not only are electric toothbrushes more expensive to buy initially, these toothbrushes cost more in upkeep because the toothbrush heads which needs replacing periodically are a lot more expensive than manual brushes, yet still no where near as expensive as the initial price of buying an electric toothbrush. Once you have purchased the electric toothbrush it is only the toothbrush heads which need to be replaced.
Whether the electric toothbrush is worth it over the manual is down to each individual user. It depends on affordability, dental health, comfort, ease, effectiveness and generally what the user feels most happy with. Electric toothbrushes do work and are effective at brushing the teeth and keeping the mouth clean. These brushes can be more convenient and get into parts of the teeth and gum that manual brushing could not. But there is no need to worry if you do not own a manual toothbrush. Brushing teeth manually is effective at keeping teeth clean and when done in combination with flossing it can be just as highly effective as the electric toothbrush.
It all comes down to each individual user, both forms of brushing the teeth, electric and manual, are safe and effective ways to maintain great oral hygiene.

READ INSTRUCTIONS AND ‘HOW TO’ GUIDES BEFORE YOU START
Most professional whitening kits will come with instructions. Always read the instructions first so you are confident when applying the gels to your teeth or forming the mouth trays. We have a great guide here on our news section How to Whiten the Teeth at Home
MAKE SURE YOUR MOUTH TRAYS ARE EFFICIENT
Purchasing a professional teeth whitening system from a professional dental company is not the only vital ingredient in an effective whitening treatment. Being sure to use professional mouth trays is also very important for a professional look. If the mouth trays are not up to standards this can dramatically effect how the gel works on the teeth – remember that even with great whitening gels, the mouth trays is the element holding the gel in place on your teeth. Mouth trays need to be professional.
The three best types of mouth trays for whitening the teeth are:
WHITEN THE TEETH WHILST RELAXING
The great thing about using a home teeth whitening kit is that you can whiten your teeth whilst in the comfort of your own home. You can watch television, read a book or sit surfing the internet whilst the dental peroxide works its magic on your teeth. The time will pass quickly and you will be surprised at how easy it is to whiten your teeth effectively.
WORK THE TREATMENT AROUND ‘STAIN CAUSING’ HABITS
It is important that you refrain from stain causing activities whilst whitening the teeth. If you are a smoker or a frequent tea or coffee drinker, it is best to whiten the teeth at a time of day or night when you are less likely to do any of these stain causing activities. For instance, whitening the teeth directly before going to bed means that the teeth will have a good number of hours to settle after the treatment before any of the ‘stain causing’ habits are performed. If you drink red wine in the evening but refrain from other stain causing activities, then maybe whitening the teeth in the morning will be the best option. For optimum results it is best to refrain from stain causing activities for as long as possible, this will sustain the white smile for a longer period of time. Read more about what causes stains on the teeth here and learn more about sustaining white teeth here
POLISH AND/OR SCALE YOUR TEETH BEFORE WHITENING
A great way to make sure the dental whitener bleaches your teeth evenly and effectively is to polish your teeth before applying the whitening treatment. This does not mean directly before the treatment, even a week or so before treatment a polish will be effective. If your teeth have visual plaque build up on the teeth it is a good idea to have your teeth scaled before whitening also. You can learn about scaling the teeth here which can be done at the dentist or at home, depending on the severity of the plaque.
